I’m one of those people who likes to fish my way up to my campsite. I’m usually not wading so leaving my pack on while I hit pocket water along the way is my typical MO. Yet, I want quick access to my flies, floatant, nippers, and tippet. Here’s a great little pouch you can affix to the shoulder strap of your pack that will keep all of the essentials readily accessible: The UnSlack Pack.
While not specifically designed for fly fishing, it will keep the essentials at hand for minimal weight. But I’m working on a design with a manufacturer that is specifically designed for backpacking fly fishers that will allow you to keep all of your flyfishing gear in one place, attach it to the shoulder strap of your pack, or, wear it around your neck if your want to leave your pack or camp behind. It will be more functional, yet ultralight. What do you think?

Not a bad idea, but I have been using a lanyard for a while and find it very easy and light weight.

I thought about carrying lanyards but decided no to because they’re not an all-in-one solution (i.e. can’t hold a fly box). Do you just carry your fly box in a pocket or something?

Yes, just a small fly box in my pocket. And since I take just a handful of flies with me, having them in my pocket is not a big deal. Then having everything else right there around my neck is pretty handy. Just my 2 cents, haha.

I use a lanyard as well, and have a small flybox that attaches to my lanyard.

Um….soon? Maybe a few weeks. I’m learning that design and production take a lot longer than I thought.
I took some heavy thread and sewed a loop into a Morell by passing the needle through the walls of the foam. The loop is attached to my lanyard. The rest of the gear on my lanyard includes a nipper (Fishpond is the lightest that I’ve found), floatant in a microdropper, forceps on a zinger (personal preference to accept the added weight), tippet spool, and split shot in a small plastic vial (could use Ryan Jordans’ idea of a microdropper too), and indicators. All are tied to 2mm utility cord.
